Abstract

Carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) has both superior mechanical properties and low weight. On the other hand, it is hard to cut CFRP without delamination and uncut-fiber, which easily occurred around machined surface due to the inhomo-geneous and anisotropic mechanical properties. In this work, we investigated cause of delamination and uncut-fiber by obser-vation the cutting edge of the diamond coating tools and machined surface of CFRP materials. The cutting edge of the tools kept smooth even after cutting, and tool wear increased with number of halls. However, there were some damages on machined surface of CFRP. Drilling tests with various sharpness of cutting edges were performed to investigate the relation-ship between sharpness of edges and delamination or uncut-fiber. The present results suggest that occurrence of damages like delamination or uncut-fiber depends on the sharpness of cutting edges and sharp edge is essential to suppress these damages.
